Digital Lenses for the Digital Age

What do computers, smart phones, and electronic notebooks all have in common? Well, collectively they consume many hours of our visual attention each day. But did you know that these devices also emit significant amounts of high-energy blue light? Because short-wavelength, high energy blue light scatters more easily than other visible light, it is not as easily focused. This unfocused visual "noise" reduces contrast and can contribute to digital eye strain. When used close to bedtime, digital devices may alter sleep patterns due to disruption of normal circadian rhythms. And, more concerning, is the possibility that cumulative exposure may increase the possibility of retinal damage.

We at FKR are taking a pro-active approach to reducing computer vision syndrome. We work with a variety of digitally (high definition optics) produced ophthalmic lenses which are designed to filter the harmful narrow band of high-energy blue light, while transmitting those wavelengths that are necessary for normal sleep, attention, and mood. Children and adults alike benefit from using these digital eyeglasses in the digital world, whether alone or in combination with their contact lenses. Ask us about providing a pair of “computer glasses” for you or your child at your next visit!

The Wait Is Over!

Contact lens options continue to expand at a rapid pace and we’re proud to be among the first to offer them. Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the new designs we now have “in store” for you:

  • Daily disposables for up to -15.00D of nearsightedness
  • Daily disposables for presbyopia (multifocals) that also control for dry eye symptoms
  • Daily disposables that correct for most astigmatism
  • Monthly replacement color contacts for a beautiful appearance and extraordinary comfort
  • Daily disposables for enhancing the brightness and defining your natural eye appearance
  • Monthly replacement contact lenses that can relieve computer fatigue
  • Made to order monthly replacement lenses for presbyopia and astigmatism

We look forward to addressing your individual needs….let’s discuss at your next visit.

Truly Special Specialty Contacts

Myopia Control

Does myopia (nearsightedness) run in your family?  Are you concerned that your children’s eye-sight might “take after” yours? While we can’t (at least yet) control our DNA, there is the very real possibility of at least slowing down the progression of myopia in your child. With the fitting of specially designed contact lenses your child might benefit from fewer prescription changes and a less myopic future. Moreover, lower levels of myopia in adulthood may lower the risk of ocular disease.

We encourage you to bring your child (age 7 and up) in for an evaluation to determine if overnight orthokeratology (corneal reshaping contact lenses) or the fitting of soft distance center multifocal contact lenses might alter your child’s ocular future for the better.

Scleral Lenses

These large diameter rigid gas permeable contact lenses which rest on the sclera (white part of the eye), deliver unparalleled vision and comfort. They do not move with the blink, serve as a barrier to dust and debris, and maintain a cushion of natural tears. These fully customizable and digitally lathed lenses may be just the answer if you have failed with contact lenses in the past due to poor or unstable vision or physical intolerance. Scleral contact lenses are capable of correcting virtually all prescriptions, no matter how high and no matter how much astigmatism!

As a specialty contact lens practice, we at FKR are among an elite group of practices offering scleral lens fitting both for “irregular corneas” (keratoconus, post-graft, post refractive surgery) as well as for “normal corneas”.

Be sure to inquire about scleral contact lenses if contact comfort and vision have not been optimal for you.

Not a Dry Eye in the House?

Not true for “our house”. As a referral and treatment center specializing in the diagnosis and management of dry eye, our clinicians and technicians work as a team dedicated to helping you manage your dry eye disease. We employ a variety of non-invasive tests to evaluate the causative factors in each patient’s individual case. We then design a treatment plan to achieve effective remediation.

How Dry Am I?

Be sure to complete our simple questionnaire at your next visit. This will allow us to assess your symptoms and help guide us to an appropriate level of evaluation. Sharing with us the frequency, severity and duration of your discomfort is important to our determining which tests are indicated. We employ a variety of advanced, non-invasive procedures to analyze your tear quality, tear quantity, ocular surface health, and tear gland structures. Knowing is everything!

Dry Eye Defense: The Sooner the Better!

Our goal is the EARLY detection of ocular surface disease and PROACTIVE intervention. A healthy tear film is critical to comfortable contact lens wear as well as optimum outcomes in laser surgery, cataract surgery and cosmetic lid surgery. Treatment measures can involve both home maintenance as well as periodic office based care. This may include tear supplements, lid cleansing, heat treatments, nutritional support, prescription eye drops and mechanical expression of the glands. LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation Treatment is an excellent approach to rejuvenating the important oil producing glands and achieving longer lasting relief from dry eye symptoms. It is performed in the comfort of our office and takes only 12 minutes. Be sure to inquire about a complimentary gland evaluation at your next visit!

Macula Message:

What is the macula and why should you care? The macula is a small spot near the center of the retina and the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision, which lets us see objects that are straight ahead. Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition and a leading cause of vision loss among people age 50 and older. It causes damage to the macula.

The early and intermediate stages of AMD usually start without symptoms. Only a comprehensive dilated eye exam can detect AMD. In conjunction with our traditional three-dimensional retinal exam using a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope we now offer two important ancillary tests:

  • QuantifEye MPS II macula pigment optical density (MPOD) testing. Healthy MPOD is important for three specific reasons:
  • Low MPOD is a key risk factor for AMD
  • Healthy MPOD blocks harmful blue light from reaching the visual cells in the back of the eye
  • MPOD is associated with visual performance benefits like glare, bright light, and night driving
  • Optos® retinal imaging with scanning laser technology to provide a photograph of the macula and entire retina to support diagnosis, analysis, documentation and monitoring of ocular health.

If you’re 50 or older, or have a family member with AMD, please inform us at your next eye health evaluation.

As always, our mission is YOU – our loyal and cherished patient. Our doctors, along with the invaluable support of our dedicated team, remain committed to providing you, your family and friends with the professional, compassionate, and comprehensive care to which we are passionately devoted. We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into advances in eye care and we look forward to seeing you soon!
